Showing Up Anyway

A whiskey glass on a bar

Did you realize everyone is busy with their own lives and only reach out when it’s either beneficial to them personally or to their social status perception? I mean really dwell on why you contact someone. It seems that no matter how benevolent you truly are, there is a sliver of selfishness attached to your actions… you can try and refute it but wouldn’t that be your pride intervening? You so badly want to be seen, or even think of yourself as a selfless human, that you’re doing the opposite.

Think about the last time you reached out to someone. Was it because you genuinely missed them… or because you missed the version of yourself that existed when they were around? Did you call to check on them… or to feel like the kind of person who checks on people?

That doesn’t make your care fake. It makes it human.

Maybe true selflessness was never about having nothing to gain… maybe it’s knowing exactly what you gain, and choosing to show up anyway.
